Yeah, when Colin was singing I was all worth it. But when Argent played his freaking wanky solos for twenty minutes at a time, I had to look around to see if it was just me. Actually, it was. His wankery seemed to feed the crowd. Oh well. I sure did enjoy when Colin was singing...when he could get a word in edgewise that is.

Oh, but then they went into a bunch of Motown covers I felt like I was either at a state fair or a bad wedding. Rod needs a muzzle.

I am willing to see them again though at the Love show at Park West. That may be worth it. I was out of town when Love played last time and heard only good things about their current lineup and show.

O&O is another one of the great records of it's time that had to sit around for 20 years to get it's due.
Not a fan of Time of the Season. Doesn't fit on the record.
Western Front actually talks about rotting corpses hung on a wire, covered in flies. Heavy shit for the Summer of Love.
And how great is it to open a record with a song about how excited you are that today's the day you go to pick up your girlfriend from prison?
These guys and the Kinks were so above the rest of their peers that it's hard to articulate.

Electrical HVAC jobber Tony Jones recently hipped me to the Zombies. Lent me the Zombies Heaven box. Holy shit, I had no idea. My God, the fuckers could play. And sing. And write. The wealth of virtually unreleased riches on this box is mind-boggling. I guess since they didn't crack the charts between their second single in '64 and '68 after they split, the record company saw no need for albums. They just kept gigging and releasing amazing singles that tanked. I wonder why they never really caught on after the first British Invasion wave...

"Odessey and Oracle" really can't be topped. I don't even like the World War I song, but that record is just brilliant.

"She's Not There" and "Tell Her No" are brilliant as well.

I can live without their R + B attempts and their cover of "Summertime".

Overall, incredible band.

I once spewed forth a dissertation at another forum on how I believe the Zombies' debut effectively killed Merseybeat and was essentially a catalyst that pressured the Beatles toward a more mature, sophisicated sound (afterall, thanks to revisionist history, the rarely spoken truth about John and Paul was they were a quite competitive team who rather disliked watching some unknown 18-year-old go to #1 with his own song while critics began murmuring about their own latest recordings). However, that was a vain and contentious act on my part, and so I will not re-enact it here.
