Ok, I'm sure this is a beginner's question, but that's exactly what I am to this activity.

I have a Behringer UB 1002 mixer going into my G4 that runs Digital Performer. When I set my levels for a guitar, bass, or vocal track on my mixer I make sure that the LEDs just slightly turn yellow. I do this by setting the channel and main mix levels to 0 and turning the channel's gain knob until I get that desired output level. First of all, is this the correct way to set levels?

My next concern is how the computer reads the levels coming from the mixer. Although they seem right on the mixer, the computer always reads the signal as being too hot. I have to adjust the level coming from the mixer so that it doesn't clip on the computer. Now, what should I adjust on the mixer so that my computer can still receive a nice signal: the channel gain, channel level, or main mix?

FYI, right now I'm only plugging in one instrument to the mixer when I lay down tracks.

i am beginner also but i have faced that problem before so when i tried to face the problem i realized:
-if you lower the channel level or gain excessively and maintain the board outpout the same, the signal will be weak and poor;
-if you lower excessively the output of the board or the level in the computer you will get a signal without dynamics,

so I checked that all my in and outs were balanced and tried to level all controls so that the signal were strong yet flexible and dynamic. hope this helps.
