Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of male vocals that have been recorded using the following mics:

-Lomo 19a-9
-Josephson C700A

I'd love to get a better feel for their characteristics.

Regarding the Josephson C700A: can it be used without recording both outputs? Does this defeat the point of owning it in the first place? Any thoughts on the ideal mic-pre for the C700A?

I don't like to refer people to finished CDs as a reference for how individual mics sound because you are hearing it after at least 5 generations of sound altering processing:
starting with the preamp,
then-
> eq
> compression
> tape (eq curve, compression of peaks)
> mixing eq, and compression
> 2-mix processing
and, of course mastering eq and compression.
Any one of those stages working in the slightest, will pervert the result.
I can only offer vague observations, and quick ones at that. I have to take off.
In my experience, the 19-9 has sounded thin unless someone's yelling into it.
The C7000 can sound a lot of different ways depending on how you combine the two capsules. The fig. 8 capsule has a little more low-end response, compared to the omni. I will mix to taste. I typically use the console preamps so I can bus the primo blend to a compressor of some kind. That is unless the singer is unbelievably great.

Thanks, Greg. This all makes sense, and I pretty much expected to hear it. It's hard to know what a mic can do if you've only read descriptions, but the Josephson and Lomo intrigued me.

I guess I'll ask more specific questions:

-Is it blasphemy to use either mic with a pre/compressor like the Universal Audio 6176? That's my main mic pre in my home studio right now.
-If I were interested in the Josephson, would it make more sense to obtain a more transparent 2 channel mic pre?

and

-If anyone knows what mic/mic-pre/processing Steve used on the lead vocals for "Sinister Foxx" on Title TK, I'd love to know. It's such an amazing sound, and I know Kim Deal is a great vocalist, but it's not just her...I hear room sounds and breath...any thoughts?
