My favorite cat (of all time Oscar) started sleeping a lot and being all around energyless 3 days ago and initially we thought maybe he was just depressed (we recently downsized our cat population and thought maybe he missed some of them). But today he's even more lethargic. He hasn't eaten in at least 3 days, will drink water, but will barely move around. He'll get up and walk a few feet and then lay back down but overall he just won't do much and will barely even purr. He's always been a really laid back cat but this is really really out of the ordinary. If I pick him up and drop him on the floor he lands really heavy and will lay down immediately. He's been vomiting foamy white stuff once a day or so. His last poo (the day before yesterday) was solid. He's not jaundiced. His nose is nice and cold. His eyes look good. His breath is no worse than usual. But he's not super alert (or at least doesn't have the energy to respond to being called.

What the heck is going on? Is he dying? Can't afford to take him to the vet without dipping into rent so basically I'm either waiting for him to die here or he's just going through some kind of illness we can nurse him back from. He's almost 5 years old and until the other day has never been sick... Has anyone else had a cat go through something like this and had them bounce back? I don't know WTF to do!

I'd take him to the vet. I'm not going to speculate, but lethargy plus vomiting and sustained lack of appetite are bad signs.

Sorry, not sure what else you can do. Is there anyone you can borrow the rent money from? Or work out something with your vet?

I had a cat once who had those same symptoms. After a few days we took him to the vet. They admitted him to the clinic for 2 days and have him intravenous fluids. They told us that if we'd waited a day longer he probably would have died.

Take him there and ask about payment options after he's been attended to. Most vets don't like to tell you up-front, but they will negotiate payment options once the animal has been treated.

5 years old is not old for a cat. Please don't let him die for the sake of temporary money issues.

i think he's dying. he won't even stand up now. i set him by his water bowl and he just collapsed. i'm looking for a 24 hour clinic now. boyfriend (the main breadwinner) lost his job as head chef at restaurant (it went out of business) 2 weeks ago so we're strapped for the first time in forever (as in every penny is allotted for rent and utilities) and admittedly our credit is crap, both from indiscretions in our youth. fuck!!!!!!! of all times this could happen.... to my favorite most gentle cat..........!

if i can't figure out a 24 clinic and oscar makes it through the night (although it's looking grim) i'm going to take him to my dog's vet in the morning and see if there's anything we can work out. fuck!!!!!! i don't mean to lay the heavy on yall but fuck!!!!!! i cry for ten minutes, stop for ten minutes, cry for ten minutes.

by the way, thank you for the responses. unfortunately oscar the cat passed away about 30 minutes ago right after i called the 24 hour clinic.

RIP oscar.... you were, and still are, the best cat i have ever known and i will remember you until the day i die. i was the first person to ever lay eyes on you and i knew from the second you were born that i would love you more than any cat in the world.

he was the gentlest cat, and the funnest cat. he was loved by the dog more than any other. he was the "cat hat" and we would wear him proudly and laugh and smile; he was also the "adventure cat" when two days after he was born i found him at the apex of a 3 foot high pile of clothes we were donating, while all the other kittens had barely moved 3 inches. i would toss him around and kiss him and hug him and i am glad i was able to be there and kiss him and hug him even when he was no longer alive. i will miss you adventure cat, cat hat, my oscar poo.

i am so sorry kenoki...i faced a similar situation last year right around this same time with my old cat Bill...it's a tough thing to go through and feeling helpless is a horrible feeling...based on what you were telling us it didn't sound like he was gonna make it...i'd be very curious to find out what it was though...

when i was a freshman in high school i had a brittany spaniel die slowly from similar symptoms and according to the vet he had hep C of all things...we think he got it from the squirrels stealing his food...that was the only thing we could think of...

but his symptoms were the same as Oscar's...

i am so sorry, i hope you get another kitty and soon...there's lots that need a good home and people who care as much you obviously do...
