Springsteen s: Nebraska Album

For a long time I didn't rate any of Springsteen's music as really ownable, until I heard Nebraska! The LP was placed in my hands and I was told to listen!!! So I did.

I can't say I didn't like it, and after the third or fourth listen (especally to side A) I loved it. What struck most was the simplicity of the song's natures! Telling one story at a time, but in an unusual way! The line on the first track for example

'sir I guess there's just a meaness in this world'.

Strangely powerful throughout, but definitely side A, of the album.

So far, the one Springsteen album as a whole that I've ever really enjoyed. The atmosphere that this album gets is really something I'd want for my acoustic-only album. (Ironically, the one track that features electric guitar features the worst sound.) I don't know how they did it, but the recording sound is glorious for just one little four-track. Makes me want to go out and buy a used Tascam on the jiffy.

And the songs are that rarest of things for Springsteen: subtle, to a fault. So subtle that some of the melodies blend into each other, yes. But the lyrics throughout are often fantastically well-observed, and Springsteen's vocals are usually beautifully well done.

I wish I liked Bruce more than I do.

Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.
