CRAP or NOT CRAP?
I think in most cases it's crap and it doesn't work. Hey, I know, I'm going through it right now. I think it helps if you were more best friends with the person you were dating as opposed to hot + heavy romantically involved.
It's like Third World castration for a guy to be demoted to a "friend." You might as well be a "bitch" or a "gutless cocksucker."
WTF do I know? I'm sure there are more seasoned dating veterans out there. Let's hear it.

This is girlfriend-code for "I don't really want to see you again." Heed it, you're better off.

And it's boyfriend-code for "I hope we'll end up fucking a few times while our defenses are down."

In theory I would like to remain on good terms with those I have dated, at least if we broke up on good terms. In practice it does not always work out that way.
I'm actually MySpace friends with a chick I was with 14 years ago, and I hadn't heard from her in about 10. It's cool--that was a long time ago and it's not like we dated long anyway.

in which case, they're still better off heeding the girlfriend-code.

not crap but i've never been able to make it work.
plus the friendship seems like a way to creep out any future boyfriend.

This has never worked for me. I'd rather not see her again, or I would rather see them again, in which case it is better for me to just not go near an ex-girlfriend.
But yes, I would fuck a few of them given another chance.
