Insight into a Really Nice Mattress purchase

Hi EA

The arrison family is considering taking the measly GWB tax return cash check and combining it with some savings to get a really really nice fucking mattress for the mr and mrs.

I've been using the same bed since like 1988. It's kind of gross and hurting my back real bad. the mrs. agrees.

I like firm mattresses. None of that "fall into a softpuff of charmin" shit like they have in some hotels.
I don't know anything about the organic, cotton or memory foam things.
We want something really really really comfortable that will last. I'm not as rich as Vincent Gallo, but I can splurge on this one purchase.
Preferably hypoallergenic since I sneeze like a mofo.
It would need to be a pretty substantial, wide bed. I'm somewhat chubby while the mrs. is medium sized. We are both medium height too, close to 5'10"-6'

And I want no Salvation army stuff either.

I have already searched and found this thread about memory foam beds but it did not provide much brain fodder.

Any recommendations?

When I was looking to buy a mattress 12 years ago, I learned a lot of things. One of the most important things is that the names of the mattress don't matter - because department stores change them - so the only way to compare across brands is to look at the color of the ticking on the mattress. The Suprema you saw in Macy's might be called the Deluxa in Sears, for instance.

Don't be embarrassed to ay across a mattress in the showroom, since this is the only way you will be able to tell if it's comfortable.

I went for a coil mattress/box spring combo. I spent a lot of money on it, but then again, I expect to keep a bed for a loooong time. As long as you flip/rotate it when you are supposed to, a good bed will last you 20 years or so.

Edit: I was slightly disappointed this thread was not porn.

I bought a memory foam mattress before Christmas and it's been great for my back and my allergies.

You'd want to test them to see which density feels right for you. I hear the Walmart mattresses are quite firm, but if you bought one, you'd be buying from Walmart.

Here's a Consumer Reports article:
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/home ... mattresses

You have to subscribe to view all of it, but it's worth it (I think you can subscribe for one month at a time). Also, you're local library likely has back issues.

We bought a memory foam mattress 3 years ago. I could never go back to a regular mattress now. It is great. At first we looked at tempurpedic, since that is the brand that is in every store. But they are fuck-all expensive.

Then I found out about Isoform/Bergad. They are a small factory in PA, you deal directly with them. The mattress comes via truck. They will not bring it into the house and set it up, they will not take your old mattress away. If you buy a king sized mattress, you will need a fried or two to get it up the stairs.

http://www.isoform.com/

they are cranky and not very good at customer service. their product is good and the price is right. My back thanks me every night.

EDIT: Oops, I said exactly the same thing in the older thread. At least I am consistent. Still love the mattress, tho.

My friend Elv has a memory foam mattress and pillows. I can't believe how comfy they are. If I had any money at all I'd be buying one.
