Quantegy 456 or 499 and BASF (emtec) 911. Basically any standard high output tape that's still available on 7" reels. Other types will work but you may end up having to transfer them from the bigger 10.5" spools....

If you want to make use of the handy dandy load function you'll need to use 1800 ft, 7" reels such as Quantegy 407 or 457. Oh, and welcome to the club (388 Owner :D ).

Whats the advantage of 407/457 over normal 7" reels of 456 or GP9?

Damn, this is an old thread.

The 388 is set up for it.

Do you think there'd be a noticeable improvement in sound over the other formulas? Or is it "set up" for other reasons? Can you elaborate?

I mean, mechanically. The transport is designed for 1mm tape. Or whatever thickness 1800 ft on a 7" reel is.

i've been using 499 a lot lately. i know it's wrong but you get much high end than with 407/457.

So, this thread begs the question of an idiot like myself:

Will using 456, 499, or some other 1200' reel be bad for the 388? As in, does it damage it? Or is it just not compatible with the transport?
