The free morning paper.

Metro was launched in March 1999 as a free, stapled, colourful newspaper targeted at information hungry morning commuters.
Distributed initially in London, Metro has now launched in a number of key urban centres across the country. Metro also launched in Dublin in October 2005.

I hate this thing, it's like some faux-benign omnipotent indoctrination device.

Buy a proper fucking paper for your own and everyone else's sake. Reading this thing will rot your soul and your brain.

CRAP.

My commute is ten minutes. I used to take the Metro to kill half that time.

After about three months I couldn't do more than two minutes of Metro. I figured killing a tree a year wasn't worth two minutes of my commute.

CRAP

Fuck it. Fuck them all. In Central London there are now four freesheets, all rightwing and/or jaw-droppingly vacuous. Brain-rotting crap that blows about the street and litters every inch of public transport. In my top ten list of shitty, awful things about London (with the Boris-electing paid for Evening Standard just above it).

Fuck the Metro.

The crap: owned by the Daily Mail and only one step above Radio One Newsbeat for content and analysis.

The not-crap: maybe it's just the Yorkshire version, but the entertainment section in the Metro is the fucking tits. They've given box-outs to DIY gigs in Leeds that dedicated entertainment guides wouldn't sniff at. I only see a copy every couple of weeks, but almost without fail I read a review of an art exhibition I perhaps otherwise would not have known about. Seriously, the entertainment section is way above what I would expect from this paper.

Also, surprisingly liberal with it's use of the uncensored 'fuck'. And, the sports section is very good, it treads the line well between fact and rumour and I find it a useful catch-up if I haven't seen the previous evening's results.

I wouldn't recommend the 'news' part of this paper to anyone, but I still give it a not crap with a side of surprise for how much I like it.

It's pish, but if I haven't got anything to read then it's better then staring at the people across from me. Sometimes.

The best is watching the "Metro lady" compete with the "AMNewYork" guy outside of Penn Station in the morning. "Take my shitty free paper! No take mine!"

Heh. I see them on 61st Street every morning. I've actually seen them yelling at each other a few times. It seems to be triggered when a commuter hesitates over which to take, chooses one, then the loser goes mad.

A: "Step OFF, son!"
B: "YOU step off, kid! I'm gonna do my job!"
A: "Aiight, so it's like that!"
B: "Hell yes, it is!"

I can't vote as I haven't read anything more than a cursory glance of either and have never even seen the Brit version.

The Brussels version does not even come close on its weather predictions and the "funnies" are not funny.

It also goes on holiday for 2 months during the summer.

VERY Crap.

the uk metros are one company that started in '99. they have a blue logo.

everywhere else it's a different company that started in stockholm in '95 and is now all over europe, plus places in mexico, south america, etc. -- in the us they are in philly, nyc and boston. green logo.

i personally like the philly metro -- it's just a convenient way to read AP.

i hate every paper i saw in london. i like the guardian alright but i didn't see that anywhere except some storefront near tate britain. seemed like right-wing tabloids everywhere in my face all the time -- the most sensationalist, alarmist, offensive, stupid, insulting crap.
