Anyone here have their siding replaced on their house? I need to get mine done, and the quotes I've got are enormous!

Are you having your wood sideing replaced? In some cases a portion of the house can be replaced or it done in sections over time. The scaffolding workers and such can be expensive.

Or is a problem with metal or vinyl sideing over the wood? I hear that these can look nice but cover problems in the underlying wood that need repairs causing catostropic problems.

Is it rot, water damage or -- termites!

Mostly doing this to bump this up.

Greg, I'm 100% convinced that you could do this yourself.

It's not that hard just a lot of work (i.e. Measure, cut, nail it up).

Repeat until the summer's over and another brutal winter begins.

Now get to work.

greg,

i'm not in chicago and can't offer any advice but i can tell you that one of the reasons for the high prices may be that the cost of building materials has gone crazy. i am shingling a house right now and the price for cedar shingles is like 20% higher then the last time i bought them (6-8 months ago) nails have almost doubled in price over the last year and things like tar paper which i never used to factor in are now costing quite a bit.

Thanks.
Doing it myself is not really an option. I would be willing to help a team of dudes who knew how to do it right, straight.

I've been thinking about having the siding replaced on the back porch area of our two flat. Also would need to replace the windows, doors, etc. Crappy experiences with both lying scumbag contractors who worked on our bathroom and kitchen have left me gun shy. If you find a contractor and have a good experience, please consider PM'ing me the name/phone number some time.
