What Happened To Stephen Malkmus[ s Music]?

There's something to like about every Pavement album. Perhaps you disagree, in which case, feel free to air those grievances here.

In the '90s...the culture was all cynical and slackerish. In the '00s, the most popular indie stuff (see: the blog culture) is super cutsey and generally fucking dumb. Was Malkmus just keeping up with the times...was he ahead of the curve?

Everytime I hear a Stephen Malkmus song now (post-Pavement), it is far and away as limp-dicked as Henry Hyde. I heard a song the other day that culminated in him singing "hop-scotch, hop-scotch, hop-scotch" into infinity. What? The change in his music was so subtle, yet it is somehow in substance the complete opposite of Pavement.

He used to write incredible lyrics. He used to write incredible songs...songs that sounded effortlessly great.

What the hell happened?

Feel free to write a treatise about the greatness of his post-Pavement career if you are a Malkmus freak.

Yeah, but Malkmus seemed to be unusually gifted with words. I don't see how all that talent just up and left him.

Is there one good NOT CRAP post-Pavement project? It seems like he shoulda at least got lucky one time.

Was Pavement (the rest of the band) integral to his greatness? It seemed like he was as in control of that band as he is of his current band.
