Something pretty unique that someone did before someone else

I got to thinking about this yesterday while walking and listening to a song... the idea of hearing something in music that's pretty unique, something that maybe some other folks have gone ahead and copied over the years but it generally has a really distinct sound to it.

Something like Elvis' voice, or Al Johnson's, or Tim Taylor's, or something like that. And you think you've got it attributed to the right guy, "that's the guy who did that really distinct thing first, that's his thing". But then you hear something else that predates it by a bit and you go "hrm, I guess I had that wrong."

There's this really distinct guitar sound that I hear in some Chrome songs. And I thought that because it's pretty old in the first place, it was probably Chrome that first came up with that sound. But then I heard the solo in the song "Who's That Lady?" by the Iseley Brothers, and it's damn near the exact same distinct guitar sound.

Anybody else ever do this? I know I used to do it a ton when I was like 20, where I thought that whoever I had first heard do something unique was the first person to do it, only to later find out I had no idea what I was talking about cause somebody else had done it like 10 or 20 years prior. Any good examples?

When I was like 16, I used to think that that creepy digital-delay-pick-scratch thing that Daniel Ash did in "Bela Lugosi's Dead" was pretty original, until the early '90s when I heard a Dick Dale track where he did pretty much the exact same thing.

I used to think that Jerry Lee Lewis fucking his cousin was pretty unique, but then I found out West Virginia became a state in 1863.

Just remembered one from when I was 20ish. I understood Mr. Bungle completely differently, years after hearing it, the first time I heard Zappa as an adult.

Hmmmm... I had a similar experience with my understanding of Zappa, after hearing Sun Ra for the first time.
