I'm always twisting the tuning keys around to find new sounds and get new ideas. Here's a few of my fav's...

From low to high:

D A D G D D (best on a full/bright sounding acoustic)

D A D G B D (works on both for full drone chords)

D G D G G D or D G D G D D

Those are mostly for acoustic, but do translate well to electric.

I used to play in open E alot, and even in Open A-Maj7.

What tunings do some of you use? I'd love to see them.

i just usually use sonic youth ones but you can always ajust them about a bit

Kim Thayil tunes every string on the guitar to an E on this one song. Some Soundgarden song. Can't remember which one. When I saw that tuning it blew my fucking mind.

Branca's been using that since at least the early 80s, if not the late 70s. It's neat--you can do stacked minor seconds for ultra-dissonance. Lee Ranaldo's done a lot of this.

The second to last song on the new converge record is in GAEFAG. Ha. get it?

My band's used a number of tunings over the years, but here's my fave's in terms of possibilities (low to high - string gauages listed)

46 D
36 A
26 C
17 G
13 A
10 D

This is a corker. It intonates well on most guitars with the standard 10-46 gauge strings. Power chords, sevenths and major sevenths are easily achived with the top four strings, and the fourth and fifth strings are a tone apart, allowing for unison work, or semitone dissonance.

38 G
26 D
26 D#
13 C
13 C

Bastardisation of SY's GGDDD#D# tuning with added high and low C's. I've found it good for Polvo/SY unison/minor 3rd lead work. Heavy gauge strings courtesy of my hip pocket.

40 F#
36 A
26 E
17 F#
13 B
10 C#

Will also work with standard 10-46s, but I don't like stressing necks too much, considering the low tension on the 10 gauge string, so I use a 40 instead. F#/A open tuning. I came up with this one during an inebriated late night attempt to play My Bloody Valentine's 'Soon'. I woke in the morning with a hangover to boot, and this tuning which has stuck since.
