If I do this at a bar where I know everyone that works there it is NOT CRAP because most bartenders will discount you.
CRAP if it is a bar that you frequent and they still charge you for every beer without taking into check your frequency.
NOT CRAP because any bartender that serves me sadly enough knows me.
Act: Tipping really well
4As someone who receives the tips, it's definitely appreciated. I don't generally tip well though, because I'm a poor bastard.

5I read some piece of "internet wisdom" one time that, unlike most such drivel, actually struck a chord. I shall now paraphrase:
If you're on a first date with someone, and he/she is nice to you, but is not nice to the waiter / waitress, he/she is not nice.
I think this is true. Besides, a server's hourly pay is based on the assumption that it will be supplemented by tips. Quentin Tarantino characters aside, I think that those who spend money on bullshit like fancy clothes and then cheap out on the guy or gal who serves the food and makes sure the drinks are refilled possess a pretty topsy-turvy view of the world. I'd rather buy my clothes at Goodwill and tip 20-25%.

If it wasn't for landlords, there would have been no Karl Marx.

Related to joshsolberg's post, I have a friend in NYC who is breaking up with a guy partly because he is so rude to waitstaff. She worked in service (various spots, mostly restaurants) during her school years and is just offended to her core.
Now, verbal rudeness isn't directly related to not tipping well, but they both show a lack of respect for the hard work that is waiting tables. (I've done it. My back still hurts.)
Soon to be lost guy also chews with his mouth W I D E fucking open - his lips never meet. That was the second deal-breaker.
Tip well - not extravagantly, but well. and chew with your mouth closed.

7havin worked as a chef in nyc, upstate ny, nc, fl, me, ma. regardless of a servers performance they still have to pay taxes on what you have.
so i always tip 21%. if the service is nasty. i still leave enough to cover the taxes. but on my way out AND not at the table (thats rude) i make a point to let the manager know that my tip does not reflect anything. just makin sure the taxes are covered for the nasty server and if i were not in the biz, i would have left nothin.
i would also not eat my food if it were that bad. nor would i ask for anythin. any manager worth their salt will notice and question why. and in my book that fixes a lot of things.
i must admit i did not always feel this way but after 10 years of ownin my own place i came ot discover somethings. and tippin is more than just "rating" the service/food/enviroment, etc.
USA government is actually takin from the txes a cut. kinda triple taxation goin on there when ya think about it.
house pays taxes, server pays taxes and the customer pays taxes and all for the same food/drink

That's be number one for me. Yuck.
I've been going, on Bradley's recommendation, to http://www.bitterwaitress.com lately and it's interesting to note how utterly complex this tipping business can be. People in the business: I hear your complaints, but at some point when do you own up to the realization that you work in the food industry? It doesn't pay well. It never will. I'm giving 20% or so, but that's all I can give. I'd give more, but I can't.

the only tips i give in person are to a barber. i'll always leave the tip on the table, as this is the custom. i have never seen it done any other way, anywhere i have eaten.
