Out of the bands listed here - Yes. Then Rush. Then Genesis. Then ELP (who just may be the worst band ever).

Out of prog bands in general - Crimson (ohhhh hell yes...except we'll ignore that little '70-'71 upchuck if we can...). Then Yes. Then Van der Graaf Generator.

(This shows some frighteningly bad taste, I'm sure, but Genesis...BORES me so much, and, as Rossini memorably said, "every kind of music is good, except the boring kind." Say what you will about Rush, but they're less boring than Genesis, possibly because Geddy's voice is so hilariously annoying that it's impossible to get bored. Plus, I fucking hate Tony Banks. That said, Genesis's best moments are way better than Rush's.)

Rush is a sack of shit and should be destroyed. Rush is not tolerated, Rush is suffered. Rush is so bad that it's not something you listen to, it's something that happens to you.

Look, I know I'm not going to convince you...or my guitar teacher, for that matter...

That said, check out "Firth of Fifth" and most of the first disc of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. The former has one of the best guitar solos I've ever heard (which is why I'm being so hard on Genesis; if you've got that good of a guitarist, why not use him instead of focusing on that assmunching keyboard player), and the first disc of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway actually rocks out damn hard without the benefit of the guitarist, who apparently barely played on the album. (The second disc of The Lamb Lies On Broadway is shockingly, appallingly, horrendously awful, though.)

Out of the 'old school' prog bands, besides Crimson, the only one I can tolerate is Rush. Yes, ELP, Genesis are terrible. Out of the four choices, it's gotta be Rush.

Yes are awesome. Completely, totally, awesomely, and hilariously fruity. Quite possibly the fruitiest band of all time. But, nonetheless, at their best, they are awesome and they rock. Like motherfuckers. Chris Squire and Steve Howe own. Seriously, have you ever heard "Heart of the Sunrise"?

Have you ever heard Van der Graaf Generator? They are a very dark, pessimistic band. You might like them - if you can acquire the taste for them, which is questionable.
