I guess nobody ever did one.
I watched it for the first time in years last night. An absolute masterpiece. Virtuoso acting, writing and direction from Billy Bob Thorton.
The feel and pacing of the (director's cut of) the film are absolutely perfect for the subject matter, it actually feels like the time and place where it's set.
Funny, sad, scary, uplifting, bummer. It's all of these things, and it does each one very well.

2I was balling for the last 20 minutes of the movie. I fucking love this film. Love it. Casted perfectly.
I think one of the most powerful moments in film history is realizing that the boy's father is gunna get it. I got a massive adrenal rush first time I watched it, and then promptly started weeping like a preschooler.

It's not his dad, it's his mom's asshole boyfriend. The kid's real dad committed suicide a few years before this is set, he tells the story to Karl at one point.

6Amazing film; makes you wonder what the hell Thorton is doing with himself out in Hollywood, what a waste...

Absolutely.
A great film. Vic Chesnutt is outstanding. It is a shame the kid grew up to slide cars down a Japanese mountainside.

Oh yeah! I gotta watch this again tonight. John Ritter was fucking amazing, and Dwight Yoakam made a great fuckhead. I hope it stands up to a third viewing.
