Overwhelmingly crap.
At best a mild irritant, at worst a debacle.
There are some musicals I enjoy, but none because of the music. I can't think of a single musical that would be worse if it were just a straight play\film.

Guys & Dolls is the only musical I can think of that I can tolerate. I guess if the Sweeney Todd movie that just came out a few months ago counts as a musical, that one too. But they are largely crap.

Special level of Hell: Any TV show ever that does a 'musical episode'.

Crap, though I admit to having a special soft spot for "Fiddler on the Roof."
EDIT: Oh fuck! I just hit Not Crap instead of Crap. Please ignore that.

The entire genre can be justified by the ten movies Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers made together, Top Hat most particularly.
The cinematography and choreography in any given Busby Berkely film is also Not Crap.
So, musicals from the sort of Golden Age of Hollywood are NOT CRAP to a degree that, I think, saves the genre from mass dismissal.
High waffles for any musical made after about 1955.
(and what about Bollywood?)

I'm pretty loathe to write off an entire genre unless I've got a solid reason to, and I can't think of any ones for the musical.
I haven't enjoyed that many musicals (though
The Jungle Book was probably the first film I went crazy for, at the age of four). But I don't think that there's anything inherently wrong in the form; I just have not been motivated to see enough to form any opinions.
What I have seen has been occasionally mental. On the old Scorcese history of film documentary he played an excerpt of the film
The Band Wagon.
"The Girl Hunt Ballad" is flipping demented! As well as funny, sexy, imaginative and bonepoppingly beautiful.
Not crap!
