Whats the deal with phasers in 80's punk? I hear a lot of it, on different records I own. Was it just the cool thing to do? Was it because phasers tend to be cheep and it was another pedal to add to the gear pile? Was it because people bought Peavey amps that had the built in phaser, and had the knob bumped a little so there would be a little phase on it? Were the recordings just out of phase? What was the deal?

2Can you give an example? Though Ive no doubt some existed, Im having trouble thinking of examples of phaser/flanger use. Husker Du used a chorus a bit, I know that.

I guess when I think of 80s punk, I think of hardcore. Clash (especially) and Wire (less so) seem older to me.
In the Clash's case, it was pretty clearly a result of dub-damage.

5For Wire, it's the MXR Flanger. That was just the popular thing at the time in the UK. Bauhaus, the Cure, Wire, Siouxsie & the Banshees, and ton of other were all using the cool new toy.
I'm sure in 20 years, people will wonder why everyone was using that Line 6 delay pedal. I wonder why ever band in the 90s had the "AM radio" bit of the song. It's just a sonic trend.

10Flanger and Chorus in pedals was kind of new at the time. British stuff at a certain point in the 80's is thick with chorus, the Police is a good example of it (always wondered if they put chorus on the drums) but it was sounded new at the time.
Flanger was used a lot it could get a chorusy sound and get you kind of a bright boost as well as flanging if set properly. Phaser and echo was the dubby thing.
Yamaha ruled audio SPX 90 and DX7 digitized the world. Blew analog to bits.
