I posted this in the shady landlord thread, but would really like some input on this situation.


I too am in the shitty landlord boat.

We moved into our new place on July 1st and everything was fine until the second night when my roommate woke up COVERED in bug bites. We called the landlord and left exactly 4 messages that never were returned. So, we called the Terminex guy and we are told we have bedbugs. The infestation was bad and he noted that they could not have been brought in by us. He gives us his estimate and AGAIN we call the landlord. This time he calls back and says "no no no, I got my own exterminator and he will take care of it." We say fine. In the meantime my roommate has to throw out his bed, buy a new one and have all of his clothes dry cleaned (all receipts kept).

The landlord's "exterminator" (a total roach and rat man) to the contrary opinion of the Terminex guy, says his poison will take care of things in one or two treatments (Terminex said 4). He does his shit and leaves, and comes back in a week for his follow up. My roommate moves back in and wakes up with bites again. Now he has to get a secure cover for his new bed to keep the bugs in/out. We have the exterminator come back again and this time he finally takes care of the problem.

During this time we left messages to the landlord about being compensated for moving into a place that was bug infested and cost us a bed and a heavy cleaning bill and heard nothing.

For the entire first month of our stay, my roommate was only able to sleep in his room for three days. So we deducted the cost of the new mattress ($300) two new pillows ($15.41), and the dry cleaning ($93) from our first months rent. We still paid 3/4th's of normal rent cost.

Today we get a call from the landlord angry as fuck asking for the rest of his money. Claiming we brought in the fucking bedbugs. What the fuck?

Man.. these bugs are really making a comeback. I've heard of a few infestations in local apartments as well.

They're apparently not easy to get rid of either. Barfff.

They are a motherfucker to get rid of. You'll think they are gone, then they come back. My old place afew years back, it was a constant battle.
I had a girl from LA stay with me for a week, next thing you know the place is crawling with chiggers. Fought those motherfuckers for a good 2 years.
