I'm serious, We're gonna be in New York in November and we're thinking of going to Chicago for a few days, possibly driving there.
Is this do-able? How long would it (roughly) take (in hours)? Are we better off getting some other form of transport there?

It's about 800 miles and I'd say it takes about 12 hours, not counting stopping for fuel and food. It's an incredibly boring drive, too. Pennsylvania takes forever to cross and the rest is some of the most boring turnpike scenery in the entire nation.

Oh, okay. I have no concept of how far away places are from each other in the US.
Driving from Adelaide to Melbourne is about 10 hours, and it's freaking horrible.
Looks like we may fly there instead.

Driving to Chicago via New York can be entertaining, though. Lots of truck stops.

I drove from Chicago to Syracuse in a day - it wasn't that bad. I did it in October - it was very pretty that time of year.

How many people? If not many and you would have to rent a car, you might look into flying.

If you like 14 hour drives, I guess it's all right. It nearly drove me insane when I did it (twice).
Get some comedy albums and go for broke.
It would probably be cheaper to fly if you're renting a car. Gas prices suck.
When are you doing this anyway?

If you decide to make the drive I would recommend borrowing an I-Pass or E-Z Pass or the equivalent. It will save you some time and money on the tolls. Be prepared that the Ohio and Pennsylvania turnpikes are BORING. Expect to see a carbon copy of this building every time you stop for food or gas.

Give me at least one days warning so I can be sure to leave some food out for my kids.
