Great song that actually makes me feel like it's summer outside, even if there's snow falling on my windshield. I have no clue why, maybe it's the "ch - ch-ch" lip-raspberry percussion line or the piano that follows the melody, but it's just a sunny song!
Not crap!

I hate this song so fucking much. I'd endure a Pat Travers/Felony/Journey commercial free marathon rather than listen to this twaddle. Mungo Jerry was the Spin Doctors of his day. Everytime I hear that "La da da da da, da da da da da dum" crap I think about the "Two Princes" scataleedo.
I am afraid to commit suicide because of the possibility that at the last moment some joker would play "In the Summertime" after I've hit the point of no return and that it would be the last thing I hear.

Yeah, me too. I don't know what it is.
Right up there with Spirit in the Sky. They're birds of a feather somehow.

There's a track on Ethiopiques 8: Swinging Addis, by Alemayehu Eshete that uses the same rythym and intro as this song. It's pretty sweet.
It may even be a cover, but I don't understand what he is singing.

So not crap. I have a soft spot for 60s "summer music", and this is tops.
I'm also amused that I don't think this song would ever ever fly commercially today due to it's "have a drink, have a drive" lyric.

Was just discussing this song with my girlfriend. I despise it.
I think the worst thing about it is the vocal delivery. The stab at "old-timey-ness" is really irritating to me.
"Spirit in the Sky" is tremendous, though.

Love AND Hate this song. It's fucked up; "have a drink take a drive," "if her daddy's rich take her out for a meal, if her daddy's poor just do what you feel", all that shit. And the old-timeyness is annoying as said by placeholder.
But... the rhythm is great. And I love the bubbly "you got women you got women on your mind" part. It's a fucking toe-tapper.
Not Crap, WF 3.

I hate this song, but I do think that there those two lines from it I quoted elsewhere totally belie the song's "summery" surface:
If her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal
If her daddy's poor, just do what you feel
I mean, on one hand, he could be saying that the daughters of the rich are high maintenance; then again, he could be saying that the daughters of the poor are easy.
I realize I'm probably affording Mr. Jerry a sophistication that his music does not warrant, but those lines have always messed with my head.

As far as lazy summer songs from the late 60s go, this piece of crap has nothing on "Hot Fun in the Summertime."
