Keeping the bots away

It seems like there's been a sudden influx of porn bots in the Crap/Not Crap and Tech Room boards (and elsewhere i'm sure). Now, this board is pretty good with just ignoring this kind of stuff, but it seems like the bots have gotten more aggressive as of late. For instance, they're even bumping threads now (unless this is just some jackass and not a bot).

So, out of curiosity/no life, I clicked the "register" button to see exactly what preventative measures there were for bots. There's a captcha (quite an easy one for bot programs to figure out) and a "are you human" question with a yes/no option.

My suggestion? Ask the prospective user/bot a question that anybody wanting to join this forum would know the answer to. Like, a question where the answer actually has to be typed out. Something easy, but case sensitive like a last name. For example: This famed grunge rock star, Kurt ______ , shot himself in the face with a shotgun in 1994. And if the person puts the right answer ("Cobain" in this case), he/she is allowed to post.

Just a suggestion. Feel free to contribute/make fun of me.

We should make them work for it.

"If a guitar player performs an especially incendiary riff, this riff could be said to melt/???? your ????. Please supply the 2 missing 4-letter words."

"Which form member's name has become a verb implying that a member has not done an adequate search before posting a topic?"

"Complete this inside joke: $40-dollar ??????."

Good idea, technicallous, seems like it would work for most cases.

Although I do remember a similar thread from way back in which Steve mentioned that 'wage slaves from Croatia' were defeating EA's optical registration code measures.

What is the answer to the third question? It doesn't ring a bell with me.

Looks like we've already identified a bot.

Damn, found out

Since I've never listened to Slint, and I don't wear hoodies, I forgot this.
