Ok, to make a long story short, my roommate from Yonkers is supposed to be finding us an apartment in the city, but isn't doing shit. I'm driving from Chicago to New York with all my stuff next Wednesday and if he hasn't found a place by then, I will have to do the apartment hunting myself. (If this happens I will be looking for a one bedroom or a studio, and he will not be my roommate.) I have lived in Manhattan before, but I've never had to look for an apartment because roommates have always taken care of that for me.

So, EA New Yorkers, do you have any real estate suggestions? Based on previous experience, I know Jakobson Properties sucks dick and I've heard good things about Better Living NYC. Of course there is always Craigslist, but I would greatly appreciate any recommendations/warnings/anecdotes from you guys.

Details: I'm looking to live in either Manhattan or Brooklyn (hesitant on Williamsburg), and am looking to pay less than 1500 a month.

I have no suggestions. There are numerous threads in here about apartments in new york. I remember a friend of Mandroid's was dealing with this shit a while ago.

You have my sympathy - when I moved from Boston to New York, my friend and I were going to live together, but he flaked on doing anything. I eventually found a broker who was willing to show us places, and all the places he could afford were shitholes or too small, and all the places I could live with were outside his price range, so we went our separate ways. I wound up in a 5th floor walkup on 2d ave. which was actually fine. I wanted a cool on bedroom in the west village, but the landlord picked one of the 5 other applicants over me.

I stand by what I said in the Mandroid's friend thread. Run a credit check on yourself to make sure there are no blemishes on your credit history. Have several thousand dollars available to spend the day you see a place - good places go fast. Get some guarantors or cosigners ready to rock if needed. Do your parents have a fax machine?

If you have a job offer, be prepared to show a letter indicating that you have a job and your salary. If you don't have a job I don't know what to tell you, other than get your cosigners ready to rock.

If you are coming from Chicago - be willing to live in a smaller place than you might have considered in Chicago.
