I've never thought about how other people might listen to music.
I suppose I mainly listen to stuff while I'm on the computer or reading, but that means it doesnt get my undivided attention. To listen to something properly I usually have to be in bed going to sleep. Of course thats not ideal either.

I'm pretty much in the exact same boat. Only I have close to 50 albums I have that have never been listed to.

I completely agree with this method.
#1: If I have to get out of bed half asleep to turn it down/off I will not listen to it ever again.
#2 If it's good and I am sleeping before it ends my subconcious will store the good riffs/hooks, and I will want to listen again and again.
This has worked in the past to determine Crap/Not Crap status.

my listening occurs in the automobile. its the only place where the kind of music i listen to does not annoy anyone else and i can freely enjoy it. (read: rock out with my cock out).

thats weird... i'm also a listen-to-sleep listener mainly.
sometimes, though, a new band or album or song will be so good that i'll stop doing everything and just sit there and concentrate.
doesn't happen a lot though.

I listen to music while I'm working. I teach English and therefore have a SHITLOAD of papers to grade. Most of music listening occurs at grading time, which is all the time.
Unfortunately this means listening to my discman. I literally can't remember a time in the last two months that I sat down and put an album on the turntable. That's sad.
Take care
ike

working at a record store, of course there has to be music on at all times. its been slow recently so theres lots of times to sit back and concentrate on whats playing.
my car is my favorite place to listen though. whenever im not at work, im driving, and i dont have to worry about my boss complaining about what im playing.

The same record can sound remarkably different depending on my surroundings. When I listen at work, I need something that will motivate me rather than put me to sleep. No This Mortal Coil or Brahms while I am working on the computer.
In my car, it's classic rock.
At home, it's totally open unless my boyfriend is studying, then it's strictly instrumental.
Yma Sumac when I'm cooking.
Music is powerful shit as it can effect your mood.
I know some people who only want something in the background.
I know other people who can't listen unless they aren't doing anything else, they need to pay that much attention to what they're hearing.

sure; environment is certainly an issue. for instance, i find it virtually impossible to listen to music unless i am near a record player, tape deck or cd player.
