I know that this is a mind-boggingly generic question, but as a future resident of Chicago, I have to ask:

What are some good paths to take to get started (musically) in the town?

It seems that the Recording School is more or less ruled out on here as an unwise decision--no demo sending, either...interning, perhaps? Just playing around at local clubs?

Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated from the hipsters/scenesters (ha)

when i first moved here it was kind of hard to "break in" - but it just took some time. some things that worked for me are going to a lot of shows, so you get to know the people involved in doing things. probably most important - get a band going. that may be difficult, and you'll meet a lot of idiots along the way. (many, many idiots in fact - but that's part of the deal) but then eventually you'll meet some cool people, and it'll grow from there. the reader has ads every week going for people looking to join/form bands. put an ad in talking about what you're looking to do and see what happens.

it's funny that personal ads are kind of taboo, but band ads totally are not. i have tons of good friends now, who ultimately can be traced back to some stupid reader ad, or something stupid i posted up at reckless a few years ago.

just keep an eye on what's happening and go from there.

i dont have much getting studio job advice. same tactic goes here i guess - there are a ton of studios in town. you'll start to figure out where people work and go from there. hopefully you;ll start playing with someone who knows someone and there you go...

good luck,
nick
