Josephson e22s

You might want to ask David Josephson the same thing but I'll tell you what I know. The new mic has a new body that is more rugged than the original 609. It's machined out of two hunks of brass (one for the body, one for the capsule). There were more parts to the 609 which could loosen. It also has a better head-to-capsule connector. The electronics might be slightly different, but David would know better.

Ah, but which year?

I kid, I kid. No, but seriously. Seriously. I kid. You will make a fortune.

If you don't think something is important, then any amount spent on it will seem silly. My girlfriend spent $100 on a "top" that looks like a half-set of thermals. I once listened to a hi-fi with $20,000 speaker wires. Those things seem silly to me.

Six grand for a set of mics you can use on almost anything for the rest of your life, or a beater car that will last a year or two.

You might be thinking "surely there's a cheaper way..." and you would be right. I thought that way about having a wart removed once, then thought better of it and had a surgeon do it.

You pays your money you takes your choice.

Nothing sounds like a Josephson. Nothing.
if you can afford them, afford them.
After aquiring a matched pair of C42s, i don't think I want to buy any other microphones other than more Josephsons. Coles makes some great mics too. and Gefell. But even steve said the 700a has no comparison.

Hey guys,

I just took delivery of my long-awaited e22s. I can now say, without any hyperbole, that this is one amazing mic. I began by trying it on a Strat through my '68 Fender Twin Reverb. Everything just sounded really smooth. No brittle high end and a very even frequency response. It reminded me alot of the original AKG 451 but nicer- luxurious even.

Suitably impressed, I moved to acoustic guitar. Not having the time to do a proper set-up I simply set the mic (in a desktop stand) on top of the desk I was sitting behind. My guitar ended up being about 2 feet from the mic and at very poor angle. To my surprise, the resulting sound was extremely clear and flattering. Obviously, with better positioning, the result would be even more fantastic.

Finally, knowing that I was about to volunteer my services as an engineer for a director friend of mine making a film (being responsible for all dialog recording) for the next week or so, I wanted to test the e22s in a spoken word setting. To me, this was the most unbelievable thing I've witnessed in awhile; the mic sounded great! Typically, in my experience, recording voices at short distance (and without a pop screen) with small-diaphram condensers didn't work- the breath of the speaker would cause unsuitable amounts of popping and wind noise. This mic exhibited none of that. Why? I don't know. I'm just happy that I'll be able to use it for a boom mic on-set. Actually, the side-address feature of this mic makes is ideal for boom-micing; instead of moving the entire boom back and forth between two people speaking to eachother, the recordist can simply rotate the boom so that the capsule is pointed at the actor speaking!

Last, but not least, the mic comes with a great manual written by Steve. Inside, he gives some great instruction on the use of the mic and some ingenious tips on getting the best sounds out of certain instruments. It's a fantastic bonus...

I highly recommend it.

Best of luck and my compliments to David Josephson.
