this is so tough to call. NOT CRAP for the entertainment value of it all. but some aspects (like the junk, and the fighting) can be more sad than they are entertaining. but i guess since they seem to be capturing the essence of rock n roll (or rather, punk rock, mentality-wise anyhow) then NOT CRAP. oh wait, their music is all one giant un-original pastiche, duplicating sections of songs from the 60's/70's... CRAP.

very tough call for me. i'm gonna go with CRAP, but glad they did what they did.

I saw this band with a friend at the 400 bar (and I hardly ever go to the 400 bar) a couple years ago because a lot of people around town were shitting themselves and calling Anton Newcomb a genius and everyone was watching "Dig!"... I hadn't yet heard their music.

I can't for the life of me undersstand how this band got so much hype, their live show was boring. Everything sounded the same; droney, done to death 60's revivalist schtick, with the same rehashed hooks over and over again + generic lyrics.

This band would have been an alright college town band, it's not like the music that they are deriving from is something that is not enjoyable for me but because of all the pretentions (maybe it was the dope) towards something beyond that I can't just enjoy the music for what it should be which is background music for a head shop.

I mean c'mon people, the bands that did this stuff the first time around did it much better. I like the fact that you can still see psychedelia inspired music today but other bands like the Black Angels do it better.

I really liked the movie Dig!, but it didn't sell me on these guys one bit.

Anton is hateful to his most loyal bandmates, and can't be bothered to do his job, which he has chosen: to play music for people willing to pay to see your show.
Not that it would matter if he were, but it's not like he's Bob Dylan or anything.

Whatever anyone thinks about Courtney Taylor, it's ridiculous to hate him for commandeering the more successful of the two bands. That's like not understanding why the guy who comes to work every day got the manager position while the dude who comes in drunk, or calls in sick once a week, didn't.

BJM are, to me, the Rutles. What they play are spot-on homages to music that has been done many times before. So well done, that if it were 1966, it would be great stuff. Thing is, it was done then, plus *again* by the Paisley Underground bands of the 80's. What, third time's a charm?

As somebody has said, if they were a local band, I'd check them out. If I walked into a bar, anywhere, and they were playing, I'd think "this is kinda cool, if not derivative as hell."
As it is, I also can't see why these guys get the bigtime props.

Sorry their gear got stolen last year though. That shouldn't happen to anyone.
