My friend recently mixed together Herb's "A Taste of Honey" with Crass' "Asylum." It was an inspired combination that got me to thinking: how does the man with the golden trumpet rate?
Negative factor: Herb is (was) the A in A&M.
Positive factor: signing Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66
Not crap.
Band: Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass
2Oh, so not crap.
Not even close. The Mendes '66/'67 etc. cements this. I didn't see the A&M thing as bad. Why is A&M bad?

Just bad in a sense that it's part of the whole Polygram/Universal monster conglomerate.
Herb did get a lot of money out of his one-time startup operation, though, so I guess that's kind of cool.

4Yeah, I agree being the 'A' in A&M was a good thing, not crapafying. Now Almo...that was another story (He was the 'AL' in ALMO).
All in all, NOT CRAP, though he was no Trini Lopez or anything.

5I always loved that stuff, even "The Bell That Couldn't Jingle", one of my fave Christmas tunes.
A&M Records started w/ Herb selling copies of "The Lonely Bull" (great tune) 45 out of the trunk of his car. Very DIY.
Very NOT CRAP.

7Don't know anything about this band except for Tijuana Taxi which I like.
BUT! WFMU recently posted "The Tijuana Brass Sound" 4 cd box set in their blog. Somebody posted it as a zip file in the comments section. http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2007/08/3 ... 32---.html

8I still have a few HB & TJB albums, and I love them all. Most of my friends' parents had at least one when I was growing up (Usually "Going Places" or "Whipped Cream, etc.") but my friend and I between us (mostly my friend) had pretty much everything released up to 1975 or thereabouts. We loved that shit. NOT CRAP.

9The dude got me into music. I think I saw him on TV when I was a kid and man did I want a trumpet. I got "Going Places" for my birthday.
My parents bought me a trumpet, I took lessons. Thanks, Herb.

10I was thinking last night; who can actually formulate a dislike for Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass? The only thing I can think of is really unhappy people could dislike Herb Alpert because they're jealous.
