Ever since my (Mennonite) father found all the Circle Jerks and Corrosion of Conformity records under my bed when I was 13, my folks have been elated just to hear me pick through John Fahey or Willie McTell tunes (neither of whom they know the first thing about). As for the bands I’ve been in, they’ve had more choral things to do with their time.

My dad "I just don't understand why you wanna make music that sounds so strange."
My mom: "It makes me feel nervous, like I drank coffee right before bedtime."

By the way, my eldest brother, who I guess doesn't have much of a frame of reference, compared us to Steely Dan. I think it was supposed to be a compliment.

I dunno, I am going to guess "no", since they have never in the past expressed any interest in listening to abrasive noise rock.

they might come to see us play tomorrow afternoon...I will ask them and get back to you

meh

my parents were always really supportive and encouraging and paid us for the cdr's we put out and let us practice really loud at their house all the time.

i know they didnt particularly care for it, they just listened to it because its something i do. like putting my finger paintings on the fridge.

my dad kept wondering why i put the vocals so low in the mix.

inviting parents to gigs is a collosal faux-pas: if your parents like it, you either a.) have ridiculously cool parents, or (more likely) b.) you are making boring fucking music...

meh, but then again, they're somewhat "meh" about most of my life decisions (teaching, not having an arranged marriage, etc.)

They have been supportive at key moments and do help us out when they can, though.

We got our tour van through my mom's company, as they were selling it off. That's good enough for me.

It depends. A lot of the music I listen to is music I got from them, and a lot of it is music they just do not understand at all. My dad for instance loves the White Stripes but thinks Rye Coalition is rehashed garbage. On the same token, last year I took my mom to see both Alan Parsons and Todd Rundgren. So 'meh,' I guess.

edit: oh, and my grandmother really digs Tortoise and Boards of Canada.

well, i think i was a little harsh in my original post: when i lived with my parents they used to let us rehearse in the lounge which was pretty damn decent of them, as well as driving us to a couple of gigs before i got a license...

My mother and step-father came to see us open for Andrew WK. (Yeah, yeah, I know.) The consensus between the two of them was that while they didn't care for the idiom we're working in, they appreciate our skills as songwriters and performers. That was awfully nice of them.

Then we ate Andrew WK's deli tray and drank all of his Heineken. It was epic.

My mum sings on some of my recordings, and my dad does some percussion. He's learning the harmonica now so he can play that on some track or other, too.

They dig my stuff.
