Another mic suggestion...

Hi,

I want to buy an additional mic to mic my Twin Amp (clean and soft guitar sound....).
I've got a PRO37R but the guitar sound I get is too thin. I need a fuller sound, so I'd like to try to mic it with two mics.

I'm looking at purchasing the Beyer M160, the Sennheiser E609 or the AT 4033. Which one? Other suggestions?

I want a smooth and big guitar sound (I use only guitars, bass and a cello, so I need a big guitar sound).

I'd prefer a cardiod or hypercardiod mic, 'couse I got only one room (recording + control).

And:
1) What's the difference between the silver and the black E609? (I've heard bad things about the black one).
2) Micing the amp with two mics (at the same distance from the speaker) should I reverse the polarity of one of the mics?

Thanks a lot.

SM57? Nothing wrong with them on a Fender. Also, on most open back cabs, a front and back mic works well. Unless you're in a great room and then you can pull the mics off the amp a bit and then you're getting more of the amp in the room. In most rooms, that opens up a whole new can of worms....

If you want a big and smooth sound get a M160. It works really well with a coincident condenser mic. A M160 sounds good on a cello as well.

The 4033 isn't a smooth mic, especially when combined with a Pro 37 it can be really mid rangy and aggressive.

There's nothing wrong with 57s on twins, they have very exaggerated high mids and a very poor low end response and I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for.

2) No.

Best, Max.
