does anyone know much about either the motu 828 mkii or the maudio delta 1010?

which is preferable?

also, if there's anything available for maybe 700/800 or less that should be brought to my attention, i'd be most appreciative.

i'm currently running a mackie 1604-vlz into a pc w/ sonar 2.0 xl

Hey there,

They are both quite capable sound cards, easily capturing what any of us are going to throw at them with equal results.
Any difference in sound (AD/DA) would be nil.
The main difference would be your needs and if those needs require the additional features (ADAT, Firewire) of the 828 for the additional $250.
Both firms have good driver support and as far as M-Audio is concerned, I have had a very good technical support experience with low response-time.

In that price range you will probably not be able to do any better but there is RME's line-up which is comparable.

If you want the best sub-mucho dollar sound card the _only_ choice is the Lynx II. However that unit is in the $1100 range, but cream of the crop below the $5000 mark.

Good Luck,
spoon

hi slowriot,

I bought a Motu 828mkII last month.
I used to have a small m-audio (the quattro), which worked fine too.
The Motu is part of my portable set-up, together with additional microphone pre-amps.
I no longer take my small mixer (a soundcraft) with me for recordings on location. The Motu's mixing capabilities (with the Cuedesk software) have replaced the need for a mixer.
I use it on a G3/Ibook with Os9.2 (it gave me some trouble in OsX/Panther).
It has a very steady performance (both with MAS and ASIO).
Here's a review of (most) current Firewire interfaces:

Be sure to check te compatability with Windows (see emusician review).

cheers,

cstof
