The first song I heard by him was his version of "Can't Seem To Make You Mine." I still think it's the best version of that song out there and I'll be damned if it didn't become a fucking anthem for me for a long old time. Tomorrow will be Big Star and Chilton solo work day.Rest in Peace.

I saw him just once, in 1984, at the Uptown Bar in Minneapolis, with the Replacements. It was a glorious, shitfaced drunk, inspired and beatific show. They played a bunch of covers. I bootlegged it on cassette and I think I still have the tape somewhere. Jesus Christ, I hope so.
