I was just listening to Helmet and realised that Steve recorded the song "in the meantime". Now, did those recordings suffer the same fate as the "in utero" sessions? Like did someone screw with the mixes? And how did those sessions go? There is a great deal of energy and I prefer the sound of those recordings opposed to the rest of what is on the CD. I guess that I'm just wondering what it was like working with Helmet in general. Thanks in advance. Later.

Wharton Tiers is to Steve what scab players are to striking major leaguers. So I find it hard to believe that a record company that was unhappy with Steve's production would then allow the band to take the material to Tiers, since he attempts to get the same sort of "natural" sound (albeit much less successfully).

If the record company made the call, they'd have sent Helmet to Rick Rubin or some other hack renowned for making hits using the miracle of "compression" to make everything sound "heavy".

I can only imagine that a band as tight as Helmet would be a joy to work with in the studio.

If I recall correctly, I think Andy Wallace re-mixed everything, including the Albini track. I don't have the record in front of me, but I don't remember "In The Meantime" sounding that much different from the rest of the album. Thanks, Andy!

I think Andy "Let's replace your drums with samples" Wallace needs needs a throatpunch. How many records has he ruined?

To G&T: I'm probably wrong, but I may suspect that Helmet recorded with Wharton Tiers as his studio was almost literally in the Helmet guys' backyard.

Shudder to Think's Pony Express Record, that's for sure. Well, nothing could ruin that masterpiece, he sure took a dump on Nicely.

I remember there was a limited edition 7" EP available of maybe 4 songs that Steve Albini had recorded for Helmet. I desparately wanted that record.

Anyone heard the new disk (Size Matters)? It's definatley been strained through the pop filter. Not bad for a bit of a groove though.

not sure if steve recorded the album, but the 7" which he did record for them is still my favorite helmet stuff - there's more zing and detail to the guitars, at the very least.
