All this Danzig-talk made me realize that, while we have addressed the Misfits and Samhain (both of which I really, really like), we have not addressed Danzig the band.
This laugh-riot of a band, despite nearly being as funny as King Diamond, gets a pretty solid CRAP vote from me. I have to add a waffle factor, though, because I've picked up used copies of the first three albums, and I really like them ('specially the first one) in a guilty-pleasure kind of way. I think Glenn Danzig has a cool voice, even though all of his lyrics are just unbelievably stupid. At least in his previous bands, the context was better. The music goes from bearable AC/DC-style cock-rock (though obviously nowhere near AC/DC quality) to nu-metal crap (at least, judging by a newer video I caught on Headbanger's Ball a while back) that I wouldn't listen to if your life depended on it. Still, I can't say this band is entirely worthless, nor can I say all their value is comedic. The man has, or had, really good pop sense, but the crap seems to heavily outweigh the not crap.
Also, I hear he can turn into a wolf.

NOT CRAP
Those 1st 3 albums were killer. In all honesty, this is Glenn's only band that I can stand to listen to anymore.

didn't we do this? i would search but for the 1,000,000 danzig refs that would come up.
anyway, not crap for the first, very (unintentionally) funny near-classic of an album, the quality of which is 75% due to master drummer chuck biscuits
there was also a song on _thrall/demonsweatlive (haha!)_ called 'it's coming down' that i really like

First two albums are great, but Danzig the band is CRAP. I know some folks don't like it when you call people crap or not crap, but I really think Glenn is a pretty crap dude as well.

We're talking a whole new density and consistency of CRAP if you can have Chuck Biscuits on drums and still manage to suck.

i once saw a review that said "danzig: the man with a voice like a steel fist wrapped in velvet."
correction: the man with a voice like kermit's fist wrapped in elvis.
his voice is FUNNY. the guy's whole scthick is really, really funny. he's like morrissey trying to do metal or something.
i gotta say this for him -- he doesn't sound like other metal acts. he's got his own vision, one that at least on his first four albums or so paid homage to early rock 'n' roll in a way that worked. danzig is a joke, but he's a good one, and there is only one danzig. NOT CRAP, ALBEIT BARELY.

Danzig is not crap. I listened to the eee-vil elvis howl while at the DMV yesterday. Two hours breezed by and I smiled at everyone.
The first record is a solid, spooky metal classic.
I'm not sure if Glenn is in on the joke, but he has made top-notch hooky creepshow punk, spooky slow horror rock (
November Coming Fire! So funny and good!) and "Mother", wherein numerous appalling elements converge and somehow make a truly excellent big dumb rock song. (Is that "songcraft"?)
Anyway. Not crap. I think I'm laughing along with you, Glenn. Or are you just doing a Vincent Price impression?
This picture sums it all very up nicely.

I think the first self-titled danzig album is fucking great. The band kind of went downhill after whatever the III album is called.
still, NOT CRAP.

My favorite Danzig story comes from my friend Rat. Rat was a huge Misfits/Samhain fan and began a correspondence with Glenn Danzig in the early to mid-80's. Rat traded Danzig lots of comics and vintage toys for rare Misfits records, and their friendship grew to the extent that Rat and his girlfriend made a pilgrimage to visit the great man himself.
This was when Glenn was still living in his parents' house in Lodi, New Jersey. At some point over the course of the weekend, Glenn was in his basement room gloating over the Shogun warriors Rat had brought him from Kentucky. Imagine everyone's surprise when Glenn's fat Sicilian father trudged down the stairs and shouted in his hoarse Jersey dialect, "Hey Glenn! I thought I told you to mow the fuggin' grass! Get out there and mow the goddam yard!" Glenn attempted to explain that his friends (his fans) had come all the way from Kentucky, but Papa Danzig was already on his way back upstairs.
The thought of Glenn Danzig fuming as he mowed his father's lawn, no doubt dressed completely in black, while Rat and his girlfriend played with Glenn's toys in the basement makes me smile every time I think of it.
I thought I told you to mow the fuggin' grass!
