what the fu*k is a mic pre??

i dont know sh*t but i read that mic>mic pre>eQ>compression is a regularly recited chain in the forums, just curious as to what a mic pre is, what they cost, what they do, you know, ive only ever played music and now i would like to learn more about recording with my sh*t tape setup. just wondering.

"pre" is short for 'pre-amplifier'. A microphone's output is referred to as mic level, which is approximately -50 to -60 dB. Inaudible. a mic pre is an amplifier which brings that mic closer to line level (0dB or .775 volts).
As far as the chain of equipment you listed, you need a mic and you need a pre amp. Only add the other components (eq/compression/effects etc) if you aren't getting the result you were going for when you were tracking.
Oh, and feel free so spell out 'shit'. and feel free to not use it unnecessarily.

i have 6 mic just plugged into my pa/mixer, if i get a mic pre-amp that may help with what im hearing is wrong. thanks man, i thank you for your answer.

I think you already have pre-amps in your mixer. In fact, I have never seen a mixer that didn't have built-in pre-amps. The only reason to get external pre-amps is to get a better quality sound... but at this stage (with you using a tape deck) the bottleneck is not at the pre-amps, it's the tape deck. So no need for new pre's until you're recording to a better format.

Yes you have pres in your mixer. If you have mic inputs you have mic pres. Consider the price of a mixer though and what goes into it, divide that by how many channels you have and you'll generally see that your pres are pretty cheap (unless you have a neve or something of course). Some cheaper external pres aren't going to be much better in terms of gain and signal to noise ratio, but with a little money spent you can get something with low noise, high gain and a transparent sound (won't colour the sound of your mic, unless you want that - many people do) , there's so much to go into, too much for this reply, but it's worth reading up on the specs of pres and what they mean before buying anything. A decent pre can really bring some of your mics to life, for my money it's less of an issue with condensers, but find that a decent pre with a good amount of gain (with low noise) will allow you to enjoy the sound of dynamics far more.
