crap...seen them twice and they were horrible both times. I tried giving them a second chance and listen to one of their records to placate a friend. meh, didn't do anything for me.

Truly, truly great band. Marcy Mays has a brilliant way with words (especially with those awkward moments of realization that can be months or years of life distilled to an epiphanic point) and the band has a subtle complexity that isn't overbearing. As a team, Marcy and Sue Harshe are really great.

Scrawl has a sort of method for lyric writing: Write the words. Skip the bad lines. Repeat the good ones as necessary. Having resorted to this at times, I can attest that this method works.

Do they have a website? I am not familiar with them. Please advise.

But this other website is good.

I heard "Take A Swing" today and it was just as great as I remembered it being.

Sigh.

one of those bands you wanna like and root for, but i just found them very boring and a little dated in an early 90s college rock sorta way.

Not crap! I got into them because of the relationship with the Afghan Whigs. Mays' voice is very good. She did a 7" with the Whigs called "Ornament" that has a cover of "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow." It's one of my favorites.

Scrawl was definitely one of the most talented female-fronted bands in the history of indie rock. I know tastes are subjective and all that crap, but Marcy Mays was simply one of the best lyricists of the past 15 years. Having seen almost all their Chicago shows, they rarely had a dud. About the only bad show I saw was shortly after they were dumped by Elektra and maybe their last Lounge Ax appearance. But they more than made up for it over the long haul. My favorite performance was when Marcy was losing her voice at Lounge Ax and still gutted out an inspiring performance, capping the evening with her imitation of the movie Carrie. I also really liked the vocal harmonizing she did with Sue Harshe.

I think Scrawl was a better band live than on recordings, especially after changing drummers. Although they had better songs on He's Drunk and Smallmouth, they really didn't capture their sound well until Velvet Hammer and Travel On, Rider. Probably has something to do with the dude who recorded those. Who was he?

I saw Marcy do an AC/DC cover show at the Hideout as Marcy/DC. She did only Bon Scott-era songs and her voice was perfect for the part. Whatever happened to her?

Too bad the biz doesn't know how to promote female songwriters who don't look like they've come from a Maxxim photo shoot.

i like stuff on every album, but _velvet hammer_ is an incredible record from start to finish

great singing. great band. naked songwriting, which is the best kind. they have the 'don't tell me that...' thing about them. there are moments on every record where i think 'ah, come on, you don't have to tell me THAT. you could have kept that part to yourself.' but inevitably it will be the part that makes the song.
