Hello, What is the difference between a medium and Hi8 DAT? What do you recommend as a Tascam DA-88 type or CFM-800? Thank you to enlighten me in a first digital multitrack recorder (no computer work)

Thank you to enlighten me in a first digital multitrack recorder (no computer work)Yeah,I wouldn't recommend a DAT, ADAT, DA88, or any other machine that uses video tape as its media. You'll be disappointed. I would look into DAWs and nice converters instead.

You could always go for one of those rack mounted hard disk recorders. I believe Tascam, Fostex, and few others make 8 track models that are well within your budget. The sound quality would be far superior to any digital tape machine, plus you wouldn't have to deal with the mechanical issues that are common among DATs and ADATs.

Sorry, I meant a Sony PCM 800 and not a 800 CFMI think for me the sound of Tascam DA20 MKII surprising (high dynamic).I am disappointed to hear that the DAT will not be best for you. Here are the links in my studio where my stuff will interest curious.http://sonbrutaudio.free.fr/Thank you for your accuracy and your time.
