As a whole they fucking blow. But they have individual songs that are better than most bands could ever hope to write. Body of work-crap. The hits- so good.

Reasons why not crap:
-Live at Leeds/Woodstock era live sets
-They kicked the Stones arse on the Stones' own Rock 'n Roll Circus
-Boris the Spider

Reasons why crap:
-You Better You Bet...ugh!
-Face Dances record up to present.... spotty at best
-I saw their 'final' tour in '82 and they have been touring ever since
-They filled Moon's shoes with a great great drummer from the Small Faces and then made him drum like a studio wimp.

I still have to go with NOT CRAP overall. When they were good, they were great.

Who's Next and Tommy are two fucking amazing records no matter how you slice it. The idea of a rock opera may seem kind of stupid but that record was fucking awesome.

I've never been able to get through a whole album w/o skipping over a few things.

But songs like

"Won't get fooled again"

Bargain

Behind Blue Eyes

and some others are some of the best songs of the era hands down

For this, I will vote not crap,

but the post Keith Moon era is quite a different story

Yes, post-Moon is an entirely different story. I would say that it warrants little to no attention when judging the idea of "The Who."

that said, let me just say: OH MY FUCKING GOD NOT CRAP.

The rhyhm section of this band, in their prime, were nothing but incredible.

In their prime, they pulled off a neat trick. By having basically a "lead rhythm section" (Entwistle is essentially soloing throughout a lot of their songs) and assigning the guitar with the primary job of holding down the rhythm, they inverted the whole rock band process! And it sounded great! I'm still not sure how they did it.

I'd like to say something good about anything they did post-Moon, but "It's Hard."

You hear a lot of Beatles-influenced bands and Stones-influenced bands, but very few Who-influenced bands. They aren't that easy to copy. "Venus" by Shocking Blue, that gtr playing is a blantant "Tommy" era Townshend rip. Some songs on Deerhoof's "Reveille" are incredible Who rips.

Roger Daltrey kind of sucks, sort of like Robert Plant kind of sucks.

They were my first favorite rock band. I was obsessed w/them for many yrs. I still almost want to vote CRAP though.
