Best of both worlds: I have had incredible results putting synths through the Orange Micro-Crush but running the amp signal direct... It makes a uniquely horrible amazing sound.

So, I've always wondered - why come EA has, like, three of most every instrument useful in the rock-band construct, yet was always light on synths? Then I noticed recently, in the equipment list, a few vintage Casios popping up.So, what gives re: synth love? And why these particular Casios/vintage? And what other synths might/should make it into the EA arsenal? And while we're at it, Steve/Greg/anyone, any wisdom on the recording of synths that you might have gleaned? While of course, every situation is different depending on the player/instrument/song etc., is there anything resembling say, the Glyn Johns drum-mic-placement theory regarding synths? (Not being pro or con re: Glyn Johns drum mic technique - just a hypothetical example...)

Sometimes direct, sometimes through an amp, sometimes both. Depends on the use. Lead lines often sound better through an amp, bass stuff too. Soundscapey swoosh shit and samply shit usually sounds better direct.

I was gonna ask the same thing... but I figured Steve would poke fun and write a haiku about me...Steve, in your work have you had any stand-out experiences recording synthesizers? Like interesting or unusual use, difficulty getting sounds, exploding speakers from wild filter sweeps, etc... Just curious. Also if somebody say wanted to donate a cool old analog (i.e. subtractive) synthesizer would you welcome it, or is it just more shit you don't need?

Donate away (as long as it's not broken). It's always handy to have some new noises available. btw I like doing bassy things direct for the sub preservation....
