i don't think she's pretentious, but i'm not a fan. i find her awkwardly over-emotional in a very coffee shop poet sort of way, but thats my problem.

i'd still say not crap (WF eight) because she has a unique style and isn't afraid to go out on a limb, but i don't really enjoy it.

Honestly I find female rock singing voices a bit grating, and Ms Wright is no exception. I can stand Nina Nastasia, who is NOT CRAP, in small doses, but thats about the extent of it.

But I saw Shannon Wright with Shellac in Athens last year, and I'll watch her live all day long. so loud! so good!

Overall, I gotta hurt some feelings and say CRAP. Sizeable waffle.

[edit: except I already voted NOT CRAP, so........ NOT CRAP with an even more sizeable waffle.]

great guitarist

great singer

i would prefer songs with meaning that i could glom onto more easily, but that's a bit like wanting to rewrite the dialogue in that one scene in that movie you really like.

not crap

Same.

_Dyed In the Wool_ or _Maps of Tacit_ are the two I'd recommend if you're just getting into her.

She has a unique, go-for-baroque way of songwriting that I like. Don't recall ever hearing a major chord used in one of her songs, but I could be wrong.

I have not heard all of Shannon Wright's music. However, everything that I have heard is great. In fact, I consider it something of a personal shortcoming that I have not made it point to listen to all of her records.

If Shannon Wright's music is CRAP, then most of us are staring up from a very deep well.

NOT CRAP

I too think she's a tad melodramatic, but she comes across as being sincere. I'm a big fan myself. I've got all four of her solo LPs and I enjoy them all quite a bit. Live, she's fantastic. Very intense.

Not crap.

Haven't much of her oeuvre, but what I've heard hasn't been crap. Is she the one that sings on a song on the newest Rachel's record?

I'm not crazy about the records, but the live show is great, so I'll give her a not crap for that, especially for the one time I saw her with Birdstuff as her drummer.

Nothing like seeing Shannon roll around on the ground with her guitar while Birdstuff, without a mic, screamed louder than the music.
