Crap. I finally had to register just to answer this question.

And Justice For All was good, but not enough to overcome the sheer weight of shit they have heaped upon us all.

God, this is a really, really tough one. Master of Puppets & And Justice for All are both great records. Even the stuff that they did before that was huge metal stuff.

But, God, what's happened since is so, so bad. The band's musical politics, the terrible albums. They're about the worst band in music now, all things considered. That S&M record? Jesus, I didn't have to hear it to know it was bad.

May my ancestors forgive me, but I'm going to go with Not Crap for two reasons.

1. Everyone's given them a Crap rating. I'll defend them on their early merits, although I'll feel like Lynn Stewart for doing so (and probably be treated the same).

2. They did that goofy MTV contest where the winner got to hang out Metallica for the day. That provided some hilariously funny stuff. Them playing basketball with the winner, and the winner's friend who did a dead on drum solo from Ride the Lightning.

They should have retired after that shitty Load album. Load was like a load of bull semen. Leaves a bad taste in your mouth and hard to swallow. My dad loves the stuff though. Bull semen, he's impartial when it comes to Metallica.

I've always respected Metallica for the way they made it. However, their music is better than it sounds. Overwrought, self-indulgent, all the cliched metal criticism except they played a little faster than those before them.
On the positive, they made Misfits records easier to obtain.

It doesn't help that they've been major label suck asses for the last 10 years.

You know Cliff must have rolled over in his grave when he saw all those stupid (must have been 60-80 total each) photos of themselves in Load and Re-load. Make-up? Gangsta rap facial expressions? Perfect hair and clothes? What a load of crap.

i'm going to have to go with the glass is half full perspective on this one. three songs: anesthesia (pulling teeth), disposable heros, damage inc.

that shit is heavy. they have other good stuff too off of those first three. ...and justice for all was the biginning of the end. i just ignore everything after that.

Only now after having puked for a few hours can I admit to you fine people that I think Metallica put out some good music.

As for an actual judgement, I don't think I'm quite ready for that.
