It's been a while since I've used a 48, but they've never really done much to excite me. I actually own a C38B (the phantom-powered FET mic) which just bit the dust, but recent problems aside, I really like the sound of this mic. It has a fairly low output, but a fairly natural, unhyped top end and tends to accentuate low frequencies nicely when used close to a source. I've had really good luck with mine on electric guitar amps, alto saxophone, certain vocalists, and drums.

Bad scene, Chris...sorry to hear about your Sony. I have 2 of these and really love them. Great on toms and guitar amps. You can battery operate the ones I have too, not that I ever have. Definitely a mic to watch for, and very worth having...

Cardioid and omni.
Sony is making these mics again, by the way. I believe the list price on them is $2200 or something like that. I've generally seen them used varying pretty wildly in the $600-$1000 range.

Analogjapan.com has a few 38B's for sale. $900-1000 depending on the condition.

thanks
got one... $650
Included int he price is a thorough checkup by Korby Audio.
Does anyone know any other differences betwen a C38 and C38b other than a change to the windscreen design and phantom power (the C38 only powers with batteries, the C38b will power from both)?
thanks again for all the help

It also appears to be the same as the C-37 FET.
