i live in Vancouver, BC. i am ashamed to say that i barely know any local bands. when i go out to see a show, it's almost always for a band from elsewhere that i like. i don't know where to go to see local acts, or who's good locally.

any suggestions from Vancouverites or others?

Why does Vancouver produce so much god-awful music and so little of the good kinds? So strange. Very few good bands come out of Vancouver. There are more good bands in Winnipeg. So strange.

Maybe check out some of the instore concerts at Zulu Records sometime. Josh, from Blackie-O Motherfucker still works there, as do other individuals with more connections and better taste in music than you (us).

I live only 40 miles from Vancouver, but I rarely make it up there. Here are the only area bands I can remember seeing:

Hot Hot Heat: eeek eeek bleh (actually, they're from Victoria).
Red Light Sting: they were alright, though the At the Drive In meets Bikini Kill vocals stylings wore there welcome out after a few songs.
Yoko Casionos: I saw them open for the Reputation and Ted Leo. The songs the girl sang were like third-rate Elizabeth Elmore. The songs the dude sang were like third-rate Ted Leo.
3 Inches of Blood: hilarious hipster mullet metal.
Raking Bombs: a cut and paste Mars Volta that's too abstract for their own good.
Black Rice: pretty good punk band in the vein of Hot Snakes.

vancouver is pretty sad for music. most bands that approach the decent category are usually only good at ripping something else off and that can only satisfy for about 5 seconds.

there are only a few local bands that i really like.

the nons. and i would like them even if they weren't my friends.

s.t.r.e.e.t.s.(skate/thrash punk)

i think that's it.
