i'm the first "not crap" voter.

i have their first album, i loved it when it came out...my love faded until last night when i decided to give it a listen for the first time in a LONG time (very ironic, considering this poll started just one day later) and enjoyed it very much...hence, my decision.

In response to Jupiter's claim that The Strokes are "overproduced," I believe their dismissal of Nigel Godrich as producer for "Room on Fire" is a gesture that this is simply not the case. In their words, they "didn't want someone (Godrich) who kept saying that he'll fix it in the mix." They'd rather spend the time trying to achieve a certain sound with mics and such.

Secondly, they are a great live act- very "down to earth" and are seemingly quite willing to eliminate the barriers between "audience" and "band." Their albums will definitely take a second or third listen to give their full impact, but that impact is there nonetheless.

I agree...catchy as hell. I think that first record is great. They seem to like (and at times emulate) people and bands I like. So far it sounds like they are borrowing, not stealing. I know nothing about this band beyond this record and these songs.
So I say not crap.

After listening to the new album - crap! Only the eighth song sounds like an actual drumkit, the rest sounds like samples, catchy crap!

Ah, but the entire album is live drums... kind of amazing that he can be so precise, and that the kit can be made to sound so weird (differently weird throughout the album)... there is not a sample/loop/drum machine on there.

Sure its catchy, but they are simple, well crafted, well executed, poppy rock songs that bear MANY repeated listenings.

I know i was a total hater when i first heard the first record... I went out of my way to tell everyone how shitty they were for a full year as a matter of fact, until one day I caught myself humming along to the 'last night' video, gave the album an honest listen, and didn't stop...

I know people will always love to hate them, but I gurantee this shit will one day be recognized as classic. Not crap.

The vocal compression/effects will be what keeps me from ever changing my mind about this band. Sounds like he swallowed a Nextel two-way phone and has been singing through it ever since. "Can you hear me now?...No?" CRAP!!
