i'm talking technique and style, not composition here.

i'm at kind of a toss up, but leaning towards dolphy. he's a bit more violent and i like that in a reeds player.

Dolphy, no question about it.

For technique and composition.

Of course, my reverance for Dophy's art leaves me a bit biased (just a bit)...

you mean to say, his work as a composer is influencing your decision? oh well.

the reason i made this an issue of technique is because i think dolphy is known more for his solo career than his work with coltrane, while shorter's work with davis' electric quintet tends to overshadow his own composition. anyway, i'm beginning to wish there was a jazz message board as good as this one somewhere 'cause i'm feeling a bit over-zealous in my desire to start a roscoe mitchell vs. anthony braxton thread.

i think the jesus lizard's liar is one of the only albums that can compare to the initial jolt you get right after you drop the needle/press play.

i think out to lunch might be the loudest jazz record i've ever heard. i instictually turn my amp down right before i put it on.

'Out To Lunch' is the only record i know from Eric Dolphy. i like it, but i like Wayne Shorter a whole lot more. although i'm especially fascinated by his compositions; esp. 'Speak No Evil' and his compostions for Miles Davis' 'Sorcerer' and 'Neferiti' (i absolutely love this one). More traditional than 'Out To Lunch' but all great tunes! I don't know anything about technique/style but i sure like his sound.
