'Combining the stylistic elements of Asian, Middle Eastern, Ethiopian, hip-hop, rock, experimental & electronic music Gang Gang Dance synthesizes a vital and wholly new type of music.'
A vital and wholly new self-consciously hip NYC art noise tribal revivalist type of music. Oh look there's Chloe Sevigny in the audience.
Crap

Exactly. As if Interpol weren't bland enough. CRAP.

I also saw them with Slint last night, and though I tried, I just couldn't give a shit about this band.

I like their records.
I don't like whoever said they were making a "wholly new type of music."

I think that newest record, God's Money, has taken them from being flat out CRAP to being NOT CRAP with many a waffle.

Not crap... I saw tehm this past weekend and tho there were elements of the music that didn't do much for me, the overall weird, noisy, sort of chaotic world-pop vibe generally won me over. points for playing fifty solid minutes, no breaks.
I really enjoy the records (the self-titled on Fusetron and "revival of the shittest", haven't listened to the new one yet), the cut-up dub/krautrock nonsense speaks to me or something

Saw 'em about a week ago and have to say I liked it. Not quite at genius level, but there are some good ideas floating around in their stuff, there was a pretty low "we're just jacking off up here" factor for a noise band, and I liked what the guitarist was doing with his synth set up. Also, the world needs more cute noise-rock gals. Not brilliant, but certainly not crap, either.

Saw them the other week. The excessive hipdom factor bothers me a bit, but that was the audience and not the band, and I was able to overlook the pastiche because they're pretty damn good musicians. The drummer is excellent. Of course it's noisy and aloof, so I don't get the same visceral enjoyment from it that I get from other styles, but I still think it's interesting and done well.
I'll also agree that, for what they're doing, they were deliberate.
But gawd, did that effing kick drum have to be so LOUD?
I'll vote not crap.
