not crap. he could spend the rest of his career making the worst records in history if he wanted to, and "gloria" would still ensure his place among the most uncrap artists, in my opinion.

Not Crap.
Because whilst "conducting" symphonies 8 & 10 at The Kitchen years ago, he drank a bottle of Glenfiddich, then proceeded to have an emotional breakdown, tears and all, in the middle of the third movement.
I sort of wanted him to repeat that spectacle when we were playing Symphony 13 at the World Trade Center, but he has calmed down somewhat.

Burun,
I just ordered THE MYSTERIES DVD through Atavistic. Which player were you? I can only recognize Phil Kline from his infamous 'Bachman's Warble' piece and Virgil Moorfield. I've heard only SWANS concerts are comparable in terms of the sheer density of sound being transmitted. Speaking of which, did anyone get a chance to see them in their heyday pre Children of God before they turned into a maudlin cabaret band?

Fucking A NOT CRAP with a ristretto on top. Being in the recording sessions for Symphony 13 the other weekend was a peak experience for me--playing that music, hearing it in the room...really something. Dunno how it'll translate to disc, but it's out February 15.
I can't say I much dig the 8, and only the second movement of the 10 works for me, but much of the 5 and 6 are as beautiful and/or assaultive as anything. Much the same is also true of The Ascension, and "Bad Smells," as well as the other works. Overall, he's earned a lifetime free pass, as lostboy suggests.

NOT CRAP
I loved that story where Thurston Moore borrowed one of his guitars back in the early days only to find that it was all strung with the same gauge string. What a lovely introduction to what later made him well known.

Can anyone recommend some good Branca recordings? I haven't heard anything by him yet.
