Get to Hopkins early, the lines are slow. Also, since I ve seen others make this mistake...San Francisco in February will be cold. Not Northeast Ohio cold, but pack a coat and hat.

Are you flying into Oakland or San Francisco? The good news is your show will be close to the downtown Berkeley BART station, in case you want to stay in San Francisco rather than the East Bay. Downtown Berkeley is walkable and has a good critical mass of record stores and (less than before) book stores. I imagine there will be several good options close to campus for the week if you do AirBnB or the like.

Alright, so it really just depends on what you're looking for and if you are trying to concentrate on things that are free or just things that are awesome. If you aren't driving, you can stick to BART. Just remember that it turns into a pumpkin a bit after 1am, which is L-A-M-E.Golden Gate Park in SF is actually marvelous and gigantic and well worth going to, and there are a couple of great museums there. Ocean Beach at Land's End is pretty great too (it's a warm hooded sweatshit and contemplating life kind of beach, not a swimming trunks and sunbathing beach), also it's right near the Sutro Bath ruins which are incredibleStay the fuck away from Fisherman's Wharf. Tourist hellhole! Musee Mechanique is cool and Alcatraz is a neat thing to visit that no local does, but it's an expensive ticket. Spend some time in the Mission if you can. That's cool area.oh! I just remembered... the Exploratorium is on the pier now. That's a FANTASTIC area.Oakland should be it's own post... but i'm out of time right now... so i'll come back to this.

Hey PRF,I got a really wild itch to see a very specific concert at BAMPFA in Berekley, CA and I put in my request off's at work for January 31st through February 7th. I've never been to the Bay Area in my life, let alone bought a plane ticket to fly anywhere. I have no plan in place as to where I'm staying either. The concert I plan to go to see Sarah Davachi and Sean McCann February 1st.What the hell am I doing in the Bay besides seeing this concert? Love art museums. Love free jazz and improv. Will check out a Natural History museum if it has enough weird stuff in it like prehistoric mammals.
