Anyone use and/or like using one of these for bass?
Might have a line on one that's pretty cheap.
Re: Ampeg V4/V2 4x12 for bass?
3Our old bassist used a v4 412. It sounded gnarly and awesome. He used it for his higher signal and ran his low end through a 1x15 in addition. I always wondered what he was doing to those 12” speakers tho. He had no clue if the ones he had were spec’d for guitar or bass.

4My bass player (and friend!) has a V4B, he has a couple cabs, but recently got Ampeg 2x12 (Ampeg SVT-212AV) and digs it a lot.
This vintage Ampeg V2 4x12 popped up cheap, and figured we can run both cabs and have a 6x12.
Years of playing bass and its always been 15s or 10s, so 12s I just dont have any experience playing bass through, but that Ampeg 2x12 sounds good and has got me curious of what a few more 12s would sound like.

5That may be a V2 cab, which is ported vs the shorter sealed V4. No idea about that one but the sealed V4 sounds pretty great with stock speakers provided you’re not looking for super deep low end.
It also may have a non-standard speaker cable connection...the V4 used a 4-pin XLR.

6I've got one loaded with Altec 417 that I've used for bass before. Nothing long term though.
Re: Ampeg V4/V2 4x12 for bass?
7V4 would be OK, depending. V2 might be hard. I've never been able to successfully use a 50w tube head for bass and have it sound the way I want. There's just so little room for control and you get what you get. 100w would give you more control, especially if it has a master volume. If you like dirt, go for it. If you're looking for clean, you're not going to find it.
You probably won't hear much significant difference between 2x12 and 4x12. It's just more shit to haul around.

8Since I finally took my V4B into a tech after it's sat around unused for 10+ years...
Anyone ever found some handles they could install on the sides, that don't require additional drilling, etc? Like just use the current screws that attach the chassis to the headbox? I had some metal handles from a hardware store way back that worked but jutted out and added a couple inches on the sides. Something similar in style to the one (ONE FUCKING HANDLE WTF AMPEG) handle on the top would be rad.

9I always carried mine with two arms underneath. Way too heavy for that one top handle to carry very far.tallchris wrote: Thu Dec 29, 2022 1:41 pm Anyone ever found some handles they could install on the sides, that don't require additional drilling, etc? 10I would put speakers with more excursion in the cab.
I’ve used a V4 head for bass with other speakers. It’s almost as heavy and cumbersome as an SVT but noticeably less powerful. Worked OK though.
