"How Soon is Now" and "The Queen is Dead" are very good songs. So I was baffled when I listened to the whole record and found the rest to be bland and forgettable. I also distinctly remember hearing that echoey rimshot sound in one song, which immediately disqualifies it.
That was a long time ago. I heard "Frankly Mr Shankly" just now and it's really good, very interesting melody, nice guitar sound. Crap or not crap? Too early to tell.

Their music held up for me, but I found Morrissey to be a self parody long before he turned out to be a right winger.
There is so much other great music that I need/want to hear, so I rarely ever give them a spin anymore.

never really did it for me.
There is contemporary pop music I like better.
Plus, as it turns out, Morrissey is a twat.

Not crap but Morrissey is a real prick. While I respect and admire the part of Morrissey that is the songwriter, I agree that "self-parody" is probably the kindest term for Morrissey the person.

Love the Smiths.
Rourke is a big influence on my bass playing. Just great.
Whenever I try to get ‘serious’ about guitar playing I attempt some of Marr’s parts. Inevitably I throw my hands up and accept being a bassist.
Joyce is no slouch, I revisited Rank recently. He’s great.
I can see how some people don’t like Morrissey’s voice. Fair enough. I happen to like it, and his lyrics too. Mostly. Too bad he’s doing his best to ruin the band for me. Arse-hole.

Still a great song.
There are very few songs that (I will admit) can bring me to frickin' tears and "I Know It's Over" is one of them. That whole "mother I can feel the soil falling over my head" line is absolutely devastating and if I'm in the right (or wrong) mood I will break down.
Though
"I know it's over, and it never really began"
can make me tear up, depending on mood,
"Cause tonight is just like any other night
That's why you're on your own tonight
With your triumphs and your charms
While they're in each other's arms..."
